City of Danville Zoning Ordinance
Element Type(s): Policy
Organization Name: City of Danville
Organization Type: Government
Partner(s):
Location: Danville, VA
Year Implemented: 1986
The City of Danville zoning ordinance provides a number of useful tools for vacant lot development, including allowing urban gardening in most districts with a special permit, and creating a designation for districts where new development will infill parcels with vegetation and landscaping. While the ordinance does not mention vacant lots specifically, there is an application process called a “Planned Unit Development” (PUD) that could be useful for vacant lot development. The goal of these PUDs is to allow for more creative land use than conventional Zoning Ordinance application.
Cities seeking to expand options for creative reuse of vacant land may find Danville’s zoning ordinance to be a helpful example.
