The Field Guide to Working with Lots provides step-by-step instruction for 38 landscape designs on vacant lots. Designs range from installation by beginning gardeners to professional contractors. The designs are sorted into types: side lots, blendable (ideas that could combined with others to maximize effect), time spenders (where funds are limited but time/capacity to engage is not), difficult areas with challenging conditions, social projects that are best served by large groups of volunteers, and highly productive stormwater projects. The project ideas can be filtered by their cost to implement, level of upkeep, experience of the implementor or all stormwater projects.

The guide can serve both for project inspiration for residents, organizations, and communities and as an example toolkit for other places to create their own guides.
