Tarik Abdelazim is the Vice President of Technical Assistance at the Center for Community Progress. Abdelazim is a champion for justice and a radical pragmatist with a strong commitment to the power of democratic institutions to do good. He directs the Technical Assistance team to help local leaders develop equitable, efficient, and effective strategies to prevent and address entrenched property vacancy and revitalize communities.

Abdelazim has extensive expertise in local government policies and practices that resolve vacant properties in support of equitable development and resilient communities. Drawing on his near decade of work in local government and another decade with Community Progress, Abdelazim brings an authentic appreciation for the challenges that can stymie government reform and a unique ability to advocate and build confidence for change that helps those most in need. A national expert in his field, approachable mentor, and a creative thought partner, Abdelazim has supported local leaders to drive meaningful reforms and model solutions in places like Albany, New York; Louisville, Kentucky; Toledo, Ohio; and High Point, North Carolina.

Prior to Community Progress, Abdelazim served in the City Hall of Binghamton, New York, first as Deputy Mayor and later as Director of Planning, Housing and Community Development. In these roles, he directed award-winning blight prevention initiatives; led cross-sector collaborations around livability and sustainability goals; and other bold, inclusive, community development programs.

Abdelazim holds a master’s degree from New York University and a bachelor’s degree from Hamilton College. He lives with his son and dog in Binghamton and has family dinner with his siblings and their families every Sunday.
