Land banks are stewards of the vacant lots and deteriorated properties in their inventories, from cutting grass and cleaning up trash to boarding up vacant structures. This work, which deters illegal dumping and prevents further deterioration, is a vital part of neighborhood health and safety—and some land banks are exploring creative ways to let all members of the community be a part of it.

Through the Neighborhood Beautification Pilot Program, the Metro Atlanta Land Bank (MALB) partnered with Atlanta Public Schools to let students showcase their art on vacant properties. During art classes and after-school events, students across all grade levels were invited to paint the boards used to secure the windows and doors of vacant properties. By offering students an outlet for creative expression, the program also invited them to be partners in addressing vacancy issues in Atlanta.
